Austria Juice launched SustainAPPLE in Hungary in 2000 and expanded the initiative to Poland in 2007. In collaboration with the Federal Research Institute for Cultivated Plants in Dresden-Pillnitz, resistant apple varieties were developed that are naturally less susceptible to pests and diseases. This innovation enables growers to reduce pesticide use by up to 60% compared to conventional apple varieties.
This reduction delivers benefits on multiple levels. Growers benefit from lower input costs and reduced operational effort. Using fewer crop protection products helps minimise environmental impacts, supports biodiversity and create healthier conditions for pollinators and other beneficial organisms. In 2026, SustainAPPLE reached a major milestone: more than 4 million resistant apple trees have now been planted across Hungary and Poland. This achievement reflects over 25 years of continuous collaboration between Austria Juice, research partners and local growers, helping to establish a more sustainable and resilient foundation for future fruit production.

Removing barriers for farmers

Transitioning to new apple varieties often requires significant upfront investment, which can be a barrier for growers. To address this, Austria Juice provides participating farmers with the resistant apple trees through a pre-financing model.
Growers receive the trees at the beginning of the project without having to bear the initial investment costs themselves. The pre-financing is gradually repaid over time through apple deliveries. Combined with long-term purchasing agreements and off-take guarantees from Austria Juice, this model reduces financial risk and gives farmers the confidence to invest in sustainable orchard systems.
In addition, growers benefit from ongoing technical support, seasonal advice and access to cultivation expertise, creating a partnership that extends far beyond the initial planting phase.
